Andrea was one of the panelists invited by the Italian Interactive and Digital Entertainment Association (IIDEA) and the Interactive Software Federation of Europe (ISFE) to discuss the (hot) topic of esports regulation.
Andrea had the chance to express his views that Italy needs a (light touch) legislative/regulatory intervention to address the fallacies of the current regulatory framework potentially applicable to esports, which disincentivizes investments and hinders the development of the local esports industry. According to Andrea, however, bringing esports into the regulatory remit of existing (heavily regulated) industries such as (traditional) sports, or gambling/State-regulated gaming activities would be a disproportionate solution, which is likely to cause more problems than it would solve.
Andrea’s views are better articulated in the article “Esports in Italy: An industry ready to take off (or still in search of its regulatory soul)?” published by the Interactive Entertainment Law Review (the full article is available here).
Many thanks to Thalita Malago, Adriano Bizzoco and Sergi Mesonero for the invitation, to Alessio Crisantemi for moderating and all other speakers for their interesting contributions!
